This is a true adventure through Peru and into Bolivia. With a new route for 2017 you will visit the ancient homeland of the lost civilisation of the Incas which spanned both countries and enjoy some incredibly riding in the Andes.

You will fly into Arica in northern Chile to collect your bike and after the formalities and the pre tour briefing you can enjoy your welcome dinner. Your tour starts with a brief group ride to the border with Peru to complete the paperwork and then ride through the desert landscape as you climb from the coast to Arequipa guarded by three Volcanos. You are staying in the UNESCO listed centre of the old town for two nights. On the free day we have arranged a half day city tour, which still leaves time to wander the Santa Catalina Convent or visit Juanita the Ice Maiden. Juanita was a young girl sacrificed to the gods high on the Ampato Volcano and her body preserved in the ice for almost 500 years.

From Arequipa you are heading you are heading up the dramatic Pacific Coast road to an overnight stop in a small hotel close to the ocean before a short mornings ride to Nazca. Home to the UNESCO listed Nazca lines there is time to see the lines from the viewing tour or to take a flight over them for the best view. Alternatively you can go for a sand buggy ride and sand boarding down the dunes.

Two fantastic days riding are ahead of you as you cross the Andes twisting and climbing and winding and descending over the mountains. These two days take you to Ollantaytambo. You are here for two nights and on the day off the bikes you are visiting Machu Picchu - The lost city of the Incas. Lost in the jungle for hundreds of years and discovered purportedly by Hiram Bingham in 1911 it is a highlight of any trip to Peru. Transport to Machu Picchu and an English-speaking guide are all included in your tour. But don't miss out on walking the temple steps in Ollantaytambo as well. From Ollantaytambo you will be riding the Sacred Valley of the Incas via some great gravel roads and the Incan ruins of Moray. Believed to be the scene of Incan experimentation to create a micro climate to aid crop growth this fascinating site is often overlooked. More great gravel roads as you head for Cusco the sacred city of the Incan Empire.

You have two nights to explore Cusco and there is much to see. Wander the narrow streets of Barrio de San Blas with its artisan workshops, have a drink overlooking the Plaza des Armas and people watch before visiting the Cathedral of Santo Domingo. When you have had your fill of the cultural highlights then stop off at the famous Norton Rats Bikers bar and enjoy some of their own brewed beer.

A longer day through the Andes skirting the Altiplano and reaching up to 4,000m you are staying in Puno for two nights. Staying on the edge of Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, you will take a boat trip to the floating reed islands of Uros on the free day. To escape the conquistadors in the 1500’s the locals starting living on islands they built of reeds on the lake and 500 years later their ancestors still live there. From Puno you will ride along the lake shore, negotiating the border into Bolivia and crossing the lake at a narrow point on barges. Your day ends in the highest capital city in the world La Paz.

Two nights in La Paz provides the option to ride one of the most iconic roads in the world. The Yungas Road is better known as the Camino de la Muerte or the Road of Death! This largely single track road connects the Amazon rainforest region of northern Bolivia to Le Paz. Leaving La Paz, the road first climbs to 4,650 metres at La Cumbre Pass, before descending to 1,200 metres and the town of Coroico, It swaps from cool Altiplano terrain to rainforest as it winds through very steep hillsides and atop cliffs. The road has largely now been by-passed and most truck and bus traffic now uses the new road but the old sections still provide one of the most dramatic and challenging rides you will ever take.

There is one more days ride remaining, from Le Paz Bolivia, back to Arica in Chile. A long day with some rewarding gravel sections and a border crossing it is not a time to relax as you are not home yet. You are descending from 3,600m to sea level and as the air gets richer in oxygen you will feel full of energy but it is important to keep focussed to the end of the day. Back in Arica we will enjoy our farewell dinner and stories of how much you have packed into just two weeks in these captivating countries.

Please Note: Parts of this tour are at high altitude reaching up to 4,650 metres. Our route has been carefully planned to allow you to acclimatise, not making dramatic or unnecessary ascents. In line with the best medical advice we avoid ascending more than 2,500m in any single day as there increased risks in climbing more than this. If you have any concerns please contact us.
