Our famous Mountains:Alps tour sticks to its routes in Switzerland and Italy this year. For 2018 we focus on the iconic Stelvio and the surrounding region.

The tour starts with a day including some motorway miles to move us south. Our overnight stop is at a typically French Hotel in the town of Verdun, which a little over a hundred years ago was at the centre of one of the great battles of WWI. From here we continue south through the Vosges Mountains with our second night in Switzerland. The town of Biel, the centre of Swiss watchmaking, lies at the eastern end of Lake Biel, at the foot of the Jura Mountains.

After a comfortable night in the centre of Biel you are heading into the Alps proper. Susten, Furka, Nufenen, San Gottard and Oberalp Passes are all en route today as you head for a small village close to St Moritz. This will be your home for the next two nights.

The iconic Stelvio Pass would be enough for many people but your route includes Albula, Fluela and Ofen passes on another 200 mile day of Alpine wonder. The followind day you are heading for Italy, although the dress and language of the natives is still predominantly Swiss / German in style. Some lesser known routes today including the Medall and Nigra Passes.

After a night in Italy you are heading back to Switzerland via Austria and the Passo Gavia, Penserjoch, Timmeljoch and Ofen Pass. But if this is not enough there is a longer route option today that takes you over Stelvio for the second time but this time from east to west. You are ending the day in capital of te Southern Tyrol, Bolzano and an old favourite hotel.

Having spent five nights in the Alps it is time to start heading home. A motorway blast across Switzerland delivers you at the southern edges of the Black Forest and then across the Rhein to Obernai. From Obernai you are crossing through France and heading for the "Heart of France". Reims sits at the centre of the Champagne region and was the location use for the coronation of many French kings before the revolution. The statue that towers over the main pedestrian street just yards from our hotel is called "The Heart of France" and this is our location for our final night on the road.

All that is left is a few hundred miles back to the channel tunnel and home.

Please Note: This is a riding focussed tour with long days, demanding roads and lots and lots of hairpins. Weather in the Alps at altitude can be unpredictable and while it is summer in the valleys it can be winter on the peaks. It is suitable only for experienced and confident riders and pillions. We recommend you carefully check your tyres and replace them if in any doubt prior to departure, especially if riding a BMW S or K series bikes.

  • Breath-taking riding of the Alps, Tyrol and Vosges
  • Revised routes for 2018 but still retaining some of the unmissable roads
  • 3 and 4 star hotels throughout
  • Some of the best roads and riding in Europe
