The Andes stretch through South America rising from valleys and gorges to the clouds above. You are going to follow them from Colombia to Chile on this eight week Overland Adventure. This is where touring meets overland travel with journeys that take you to remote and developing areas. Taking more time than a traditional tour allows you to immerse yourself in the culture and colour of the countries.

Colombia was once closed to travel until President Alvaro Uribe revolutionised the running of the country. Now far safer, it is one of the many highlights of this remarkable journey. Bogota and Medellin with their Zona Rosa districts are warm and welcoming and as you ride through the vast coffee region you get your first taste of the Andes.

In Ecuador you cross the Equator and after time to explore the capital Quito you are heading for the Amazonian Rain Forest as you continue southwards. Ecuador gives way to an action packed few weeks in Peru. The northern deserts fade as we cross the Andes once more.

UNESCO Heritage sites abound. The mysterious Nasca lines, Cusco and of course a day visiting the long lost Machu Picchu high in the clouds. These days on the Gringo Trail in Peru take you back in time to the lost kingdom of the Incas. There are two nights to be spent on the shores of Lake Titicaca, the world's highest navigable lake and a chance to visit the floating reed islands, built to escape the Conquistadors centuries ago and still lived on today.

Lake Titicaca is our route to Bolivia. La Paz is the world's highest captial at over 3,600 metres. There is a chance to ride the infamous Carretera del Muerte or Road of Death, now quieter than it used to be. Leaving Bolivia you are crossing back to Peru and the White City of Arequipa – home to the Ice Maiden, a young girl frozen at the summit of Mount Ampato after being sacrificed 500 years ago.

Your journey now heads for the Pacific Ocean as you cross to Chile for the first time and ride into the Atacama Desert, the driest place on Earth. A few nights spent riding the Andes in Argentina takes you towards the pampas as we head for Buenos Aires to celebrate our tour with a night of Argentine Tango and the finest Steaks!.

Remarkable mountain riding through the Andes, UNESCO sites, unique wildlife all with the benefits of our experienced Tour Leader means this will be a journey never to be forgotten.

Please Note:Your journey will actually start in Sept / Oct 2020 with a BMW Off Road Skills Level One training course and pre-tour briefing. We want to make sure that everyone is prepared and ready for the journey ahead. For international clients we will endeavour to make local arrangements for training and the pre-tour briefing will be available via teleconferencing.

Riding Style

Overland travel for an extended period is not the same as touring, even adventure touring. The challenges nor rewards should be underestimated. Daily movement becomes the norm, ride, sleep, repeat. The rewards are huge as you become immersed in a country and its culture, you feel at one with the place you are travelling through. However it can also be challenging, even with plenty of non riding days spread over the eight weeks. A couple of these are truly rest days but on the others there is always something to see, something to do and you need to pace yourself. There is lots crammed in, but you cannot do it all!

We provide you with route guidance notes, maps and GPS routes (in a BMW/Garmin format) and GPS maps so you can chose to ride independently at your pace, stopping to see what you want to see when you want to. You are always welcome to ride with the Tour Leader who will set a leave time each day so you can join them. You can ride with them every day or swap and change what you want to do each day. You have the freedom to choose. How you ride is your choice. You are not compelled to ride in a line behind the Tour Leader at a pace set by the steadiest rider. You have freedom to make your own ride – it is not only the most enjoyable way but also the safest.

Roads

This trip has several days where there are some gravel road routes. It also has some days on poorly maintained and remote roads. Whether the riding is a challenge or "brilliant" will depend on your experience. If you have doubts or concerns about you suitability then please call us to discuss? We will routinely contact everyone who books to discuss your experience.
